The LA Metro is reconfiguring some elevators to remain open when not in use to prevent people from hiding inside and committing crimes. This concept is called the open-door elevator. The elevators are also designed to be cleaner and address concerns about strong odors. The idea is to deter people from doing “illegal activity.” According to the agency, graffiti, vandalism, drug use and other crimes have been reported in elevators.
The LA Metro has taken other safety measures, including:
Taller fare gates: Taller fare gates have been added at three rail stations, with the first at the LAX/Metro Transit Center.
Metal detectors: Metal detectors have been adopted.
Security cameras: Security cameras have been installed across the system to monitor and deter criminal activity.
Improved lighting: Improved lighting at stations and on buses has been implemented.
Fare gates: Fare gates have been implemented to ensure fare compliance and reduce fare evasion.
Bus operator barriers: Bus operator barriers have been installed to protect bus operators.
