Check Car Safety Laws
Before hitting the road, be sure to follow California’s car seat laws:
Under 2 years old: Must be in a rear-facing infant seat in the back seat.
Kids ages 8 and under: Need a booster or car seat.
Children over 8 years or taller than 4’9”: Can use just a seat belt.
Schedule Regular Breaks
Plan stops every 2-3 hours to let your baby stretch, feed, and get a diaper change. Breaks are important for both your baby’s comfort and your own.
Create a Cozy Car Seat Setup
Use a sunshade to keep the seat cool, and pack a soft blanket for comfort. Keep favorite toys or books handy for easy entertainment.
Prepare for the Unexpected
Always have a "just in case" bag with extra diapers, wipes, snacks, clothes, and a small first-aid kit. Baby-safe sunscreen is also a great addition if you’re traveling in warmer weather.
Plan Around Rush Hour
In busy metro areas, traffic can start as early as 8 a.m. and again around 3-4 p.m. To avoid getting stuck, plan your drive outside these peak hours, or take non-freeway scenic routes for a more enjoyable and relaxed drive.
Snacks and Hydration
If your baby is starting solids, pack easy, mess-free snacks like puffs or pureed pouches. For breastfeeding moms, keep water and healthy snacks within reach to stay hydrated and energized.
Play Soothing Music or Audiobooks
Babies often find the sound of soft music or a calming voice soothing. Use lullabies, soothing music, or an audiobook to create a peaceful atmosphere in the car.
Whether you're flying or driving, these tips will help make your journey smoother and keep your baby happy and comfortable along the way!
