As a travel agent specializing in family vacations, I know how important it is to find activities that cater to everyone—from the tiniest toddlers to grandparents. Whether you’re planning a quick weekend getaway or a longer family adventure, here’s how to make the most of your Catalina Island trip.
Why Catalina Island is the Perfect Family Destination?
Catalina Island offers a variety of activities, making it an ideal spot for multi-generational travel. Whether your family is full of adventure-seekers or prefers more laid-back activities, Catalina has something for everyone.
Here are just a few reasons why families love Catalina Island:
Easy Access: A quick ferry ride from Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point, Catalina is an accessible escape from mainland life.
Stunning Nature: From crystal-clear waters to scenic hiking trails, nature lovers of all ages will find something to enjoy.
Adventure for All Ages: From ziplining and kayaking to relaxing on Descanso Beach, Catalina offers experiences tailored to all family members.
Expert Tips for Planning a Family Vacation to Catalina Island
1. Start with Family-Friendly Accommodations
When planning a trip, it’s important to choose accommodations that fit your family’s needs. Look for hotels or vacation rentals that provide amenities like connecting rooms, cribs, or even babysitting services. Many properties on Catalina are designed with families in mind, offering everything from spacious suites to stroller-friendly grounds.
For an unforgettable stay, I always recommend choosing accommodations near Avalon—the island’s main town. You will love the convenience of walking to restaurants, shops, and activities, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the Pacific.
Hermit Gulch is the only campground in the City of Avalon, nestled in Avalon Canyon just a short walk from Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden and less than two miles from the ocean. With 40 tent sites, 7 tent cabins, hot showers, restrooms, picnic tables, BBQs, and nearby hiking trails, it's perfect for enjoying nature while staying close to downtown attractions. The best time to visit Catalina Island is during the fall months, particularly September and October. The weather is still warm and sunny, but the crowds have thinned. You'll still find lush hillsides and water still warm enough for swimming.
2. Book Activities for All Ages
Catalina Island is packed with activities that cater to every family member, whether they’re a thrill-seeker or prefer a more relaxed pace.
For the Kids: Let the little ones explore Catalina’s calm beaches, like Descanso Beach, where they can safely play in the sand and splash in shallow waters. Don’t miss the Catalina Island Aquarium for an up-close look at local marine life.
For the Teens: Keep the adventure going with a ziplining tour over Descanso Canyon, or rent kayaks and explore the island’s beautiful coastline. Teens can also enjoy snorkeling, paddleboarding, or even parasailing!
For Parents and Grandparents: While the kids are off exploring, parents and grandparents can unwind at Island Spa Catalina, where oceanfront views and luxurious treatments offer a well-deserved break. For a bit of island history, a tour of the Catalina Casino is a must. The casino isn’t about gambling but instead offers fascinating tours of this art deco masterpiece.
3. Consider a Family-Friendly Tour
Booking a guided tour can help the whole family experience Catalina’s natural beauty and unique history. From glass-bottom boat tours showcasing the vibrant underwater world to jeep tours that take you into the island’s rugged interior, there are plenty of ways to explore Catalina without tiring out the little ones.
For something truly special, I recommend a sunset cruise. This family-friendly option lets everyone enjoy stunning views as the sun sets over the Pacific, creating memories you’ll treasure forever.
4. Make Dining Fun and Easy
Catalina Island has several family-friendly dining options, perfect for parents looking to relax after a busy day. Many restaurants in Avalon offer casual outdoor dining with menus that appeal to both kids and adults. If you have picky eaters, there’s no shortage of places offering burgers, pizza, and even beachfront picnics.
One of my favorite tips for families is to plan a beachfront picnic at Lover’s Cove. Not only is it an affordable way to enjoy local fare, but the scenic surroundings make it feel extra special. Plus, the kids will love watching the boats pass by while they snack!
5. Don’t Forget to Pack Smart
When traveling with kids, it’s important to pack strategically. Catalina’s laid-back vibe means you won’t need a lot of formal clothes, but make sure you pack:
Sunscreen and hats to protect from the sun.
Comfortable walking shoes for exploring Avalon and its many attractions.
Swimsuits and beach gear for a day by the ocean.
For families traveling with infants or toddlers, I recommend looking into stroller rentals or baby gear services on the island. This allows you to travel light while ensuring your little ones are comfortable throughout your stay.
